When you purchase from The Carbon Company, we will offset the equivalent amount of your carbon dioxide (CO2) footprint through the use of one or more of the following carbon offset technologies:
Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) are a commodity that represents the environmental attributes of electricity generated in the United States from renewable sources like wind, solar, hydro and biomass. These environmental attributes include all fuel source, emissions, air quality and other environmental characteristics and benefits resulting from the generation of energy by a renewable energy resource. RECs may be used to offset or reduce the pollution impact of electricity generated from the traditional sources used to generate system power — coal and gas. All of the RECs used for this product will be sourced from 100% renewable sources.
Forest Sequestration offsets are created when a reforestation project is completed and has had ample time to grow into a quantifiable amount of sequestered carbon, typically five to ten years. As a forest grows towards maturity, the trees are measured in order to assess the growth and amount of carbon stored. This measurement process is repeated once every two to five years. Reforestation companies such as American Forest have derived a methodology that is based on assumptions and averages designed to account for factors such as average CO2 sequestration across different tree species and geography; average percentage of trees planted that survive to maturity in different environments; and the average age of tree maturity. This recognizes the sequestration benefits that the trees will provide over their entire lives in the year that the trees are planted. Not only does Forest Sequestration store carbon but it provides other benefits such as cleaner air, soil retention, and water filtration as well as increased wildlife habitat and the aesthetic value is definitely quantifiable. Forest Sequestration provides all of these attributes while naturally scrubbing the environment and atmosphere.
Carbon Financial Instruments (CFI’s) are traded on the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) and represent verified emissions reductions made by participating CCX members or through qualifying carbon sequestration or mitigation projects registered with CCX. CCX is North America’s only, and the world’s first, legally binding multi-sectoral, rule-based and integrated greenhouse gas (GHG) emission registry, reduction and trading system — and it’s completely voluntary!
The price for this purchase of The Carbon Company Carbon Offsets is $0.01 per pound of CO2. By purchasing on our website, you agree that we may charge your credit card for the full amount of the purchase price for your order, plus any applicable taxes or other charges shown for your order. If your credit card becomes cancelled or no longer valid, please contact us immediately at (719) 740-0302. You will be responsible for and agree to pay any charges that are not honored or paid by your credit card issuer. If you do not pay the charges for your purchase in full and on time, we will have no obligation to provide any Carbon Offsets for which you have not fully paid, and in addition may cancel this agreement by providing you with written notice.
The Carbon Company Carbon Offsets are sold in pounds of CO2. A minimum purchase of 1600 pounds is required for product delivery. For each Carbon Offset, a combination of RECs, Forest Sequestration Offsets, CCX Offsets and/or other carbon offsets of CO2 are purchased and retired on your behalf. Your purchase does not actually reduce the CO2 emissions associated with your energy consumption, but helps to offset the release of the total number of tons of CO2 emissions elsewhere. Your purchase will not prevent the emissions of other harmful pollutants associated with your energy consumption, such as other greenhouse gases, but it will reduce emissions from traditional production of energy which would otherwise result in greenhouse gases.
REC quantities are converted to an estimated number of tons of CO2 offset as a result of the generation of electricity from cleaner renewable sources based on the carbon profile of the regional electric grid or power pool where the applicable renewable generation facility is located. Regional carbon profile data is obtained from the Department of Energy's E-GRID program.
For Forest Sequestration Offsets, the estimated amount of CO2 sequestration is derived using a methodology developed by American Forests. This recognizes the sequestration benefits that the trees will provide over their entire lives in the year that the trees are planted.
CCX offsets are denominated in tons of CO2, so no conversion is necessary.
We believe that these offset methodologies are scientifically valid and are designed to provide reasonably accurate estimates of the CO2 impact of the offset transactions described above. You acknowledge that the CO2 offset amounts are estimates determined in accordance with these methodologies, and that the actual amount of CO2 offset may be different from these estimates and may be different from the amount of CO2 emissions that you are intending to offset.
The Carbon Calculator uses several assumptions to arrive at your estimated carbon footprint. Your actual emissions may vary from these estimates depending on a variety of factors, including your actual energy usage, differences in seasonality and location and energy prices. All calculators are based on averages.
The Carbon Company will offset the quantity of Carbon Offsets purchased by you on an annual basis by purchasing and retiring on your behalf CCX Offsets and/or other carbon offset technologies such as RECs, carbon sequestration or other carbon mitigation instruments that meet The Carbon Company standards for product quality and verification. These offsets will be will be purchased and/or generated in the calendar year of your purchase, the first six months of the following calendar year or the last 6 months of the prior calendar year and will be retired once and only once.
